Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana: Revolutionizing Healthcare in Maharashtra

Healthcare is a fundamental right, and ensuring access to quality medical care is a crucial aspect of any government's responsibility. In this pursuit, the Government of Maharashtra introduced the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY), a flagship health insurance scheme that aims to provide cashless quality medical care to beneficiaries suffering from catastrophic illnesses requiring hospitalization for surgeries and therapies under identified specialty services. This groundbreaking initiative has transformed the healthcare landscape in Maharashtra and has been a lifeline for thousands of families in their times of need

A Brief Overview of the Scheme

The Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, formerly known as the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana, was officially launched on July 2, 2012, in eight districts of Maharashtra. Recognizing its success and the dire need for such a scheme, it was subsequently expanded to cover all 28 districts of the state on November 21, 2013.

The primary objective of the scheme is to provide comprehensive and cashless healthcare services for identified diseases through a network of service providers from both the government and private sectors. It covers a wide range of medical treatments and services, ensuring that beneficiaries do not have to bear the financial burden of healthcare expenses during times of illness.

Integration with Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)

The year 2018 marked a significant development in India's healthcare landscape with the launch of the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) by the Government of India. To maximize the benefits to the people of Maharashtra, the state integrated the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana with AB-PMJAY. This integration took effect on April 1, 2020.

Under this integrated approach, beneficiaries receive healthcare coverage through a mixed Insurance and Assurance Mode. United India Insurance Company Limited, a public sector undertaking company, is responsible for providing health insurance coverage to beneficiaries in the insurance mode. Meanwhile, the State Health Assurance Society covers beneficiaries under the assurance mode by paying an insurance premium of INR 797 per family per year to the insurance company on behalf of eligible beneficiary families.

The scheme's financial burden is shared between the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra in a 60:40 ratio, ensuring its sustainability and effectiveness in reaching the masses.
