PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: Government Pushes Rooftop Solar for Free Electricity

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:

The central government has launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana with the objective of promoting rooftop solar power across residential households and reducing the burden of electricity expenses. The scheme is being seen as a major step toward clean energy adoption and energy self-reliance.

Up to 300 Units of Free Electricity Every Month

Under the scheme, eligible households can receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month through power generated from rooftop solar panels. This electricity is meant to cover a significant portion of household consumption, helping families cut down or even eliminate their monthly power bills.

Attractive Subsidy for Rooftop Solar Installation

The government is offering financial subsidies to encourage homeowners to install rooftop solar systems. The subsidy structure is as follows:

  • Around ₹30,000 for a 1 kW solar system

  • Around ₹60,000 for a 2 kW solar system

  • Up to ₹78,000 for a 3 kW or higher capacity system (maximum limit)

This subsidy significantly reduces the upfront cost of solar installation for households.

Net-Metering Allows Extra Power to Be Sold Back to Grid

Electricity generated from the rooftop solar system is first used for household needs. Any excess power can be fed back into the electricity grid through the net-metering system, allowing consumers to gain additional financial benefits.

Low-Interest Loans to Support Installation Costs

To further ease adoption, the scheme also provides access to low-interest loans, helping households manage the initial investment required for installing solar panels.

Simple Online Application Process

Interested applicants must apply online through the official national portal. Homeowners can select an approved vendor for installation, ensuring quality standards and smooth implementation of the solar system.

Target to Cover One Crore Homes Nationwide

The government aims to install rooftop solar systems in up to one crore homes across India under this initiative. The large-scale rollout is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s renewable energy capacity.

Boost to Clean Energy and Environmental Sustainability

Apart from reducing electricity bills, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana supports clean energy adoption, lowers dependence on conventional power sources, and contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions.

Overall, the scheme is being viewed as a win-win initiative—benefiting households financially while advancing India’s renewable energy goals.
